How to Scatter and Place Props in Unity Scenes
A forest needs a thousand trees. A battlefield needs scattered debris. Placing them one by one is days of mind-numbing dragging — and pure random placement looks wrong. Here's how rule-based prop scattering does it in minutes.
The manual placement trap
Environment art is 90% repetition: rocks, grass tufts, crates, rubble, furniture. Dragging each one into place, rotating it, scaling it slightly — it's the slowest part of level building, and hand-placed scatter still ends up looking unnaturally even. Your time is better spent on the 10% that players actually notice.
Random vs. rule-based scattering
Pure random placement is fast but ugly: props intersect, float, or cluster weirdly. Rule-based scattering adds the constraints that make it look designed — density controls (how many per area), placement rules (on the ground, near walls, away from paths), and variation (random rotation and scale within ranges you set). The computer does the thousand placements; you set the taste.
What good scattering gives you
- Density control. Paint or define regions and set how crowded they get — sparse here, dense there.
- Natural variation. Random rotation and scale ranges so no two placements look stamped out.
- Editable results. This is the critical one: scattered props should land as normal scene objects you can still move, delete, or tweak by hand afterward. Black-box procedural systems that lock you out are a trap.
Scatter in minutes: Smart Prop Placement
Smart Prop Placement is rule-based prop scattering for Unity: define your rules and density, scatter across your scene in one pass, and every result stays a regular editable scene object. Need to nudge a rock? Just grab it. The scattering does the grunt work; you keep full art direction.

Scattering tips
Work in layers — ground cover first, then mid-size props, then hero pieces. Vary density with distance from the player's path (dense at the edges, clear where they walk). And always do a final hand-pass: scattering gets you 90% there, and ten minutes of nudging makes it look hand-crafted.
