Unity Mesh Optimization: Simplify, LOD & Combine in One Workflow

Rendering performance comes down to three things: how many triangles you draw, how far away they matter, and how many draw calls it takes. Here's the complete mesh optimization workflow that tackles all three — in order.

Step 1: Simplify — cut the triangles

Start with the raw geometry. Models arrive overweight: 100k-triangle props where 10k would do. Mesh simplification collapses edges algorithmically, keeping silhouettes and dropping flat-area density. Always simplify first — every later step is cheaper when the base meshes are lean.

Step 2: Generate LODs — pay for detail only when it's seen

Even simplified meshes are wasted at distance. Automatic LOD generation builds the distance-scaled versions (LOD1, LOD2, LOD3) and wires them into Unity's LODGroup, so the GPU only renders what the camera can actually resolve. This is where open scenes get their biggest savings.

Step 3: Combine — collapse the draw calls

Now that the meshes are light and LOD'd, combine the static ones: merge geometry and bake a single texture atlas so dozens of objects render in one draw call. On mobile and VR, this step alone can double your frame rate.

Why one integrated workflow beats three tools

You can run these steps with separate tools — and many teams do. But the handoffs are where time dies: export between apps, re-import, settings that don't carry over, LOD chains that break when you re-simplify. An integrated pipeline keeps everything in the Editor with consistent settings from step to step.

One Click Mesh Suite is that pipeline: simplification, LOD generation, and mesh combining in one Editor workflow. Run the full pass on a scene's assets and you're done — no app-hopping, no broken chains, no rework when art changes.

  1. Select the meshes to optimize.
  2. Set simplification targets and LOD levels.
  3. Generate — simplified meshes, LOD chains, and combined draw-call-friendly output in one pass.
